What Is A Good Desk Size?

Working from home is increasing and you’ve decided you need a desk to make yourself as productive.

If you’ve never bought one before then you’re asking yourself what is a good size desk?

It’s a valid question…

You don’t want to spend a lot of money on a beautifully-crafted piece for it to the wrong proportions for the room or too small to fit your computer monitors.

Let’s take a look.

What is a good desk size?

Looking to buy a writing desk? 

Search for one with a work surface height of 28 to 30 inch, this is an optimal for writing and general purpose desk use which is actually the same as a dining table. 

If you’re someone who types more than you write, your computer desk should be slightly lower at 24 to 28 inch high.

What about a standing desk? 

They’re great for the posture and you should be using one that’s around 44 inches high and 20 to 30 inches deep. 

You need some knee space though, don’t you?

Nothing worse than hitting your knees on the underside of a desk as you tuck yourself in, ready to get down to work.

Our recommendation is 26 inches high, 28 inches wide and 15 inches deep.

Drawers installed at the bottom of the desk can be used to hold stationary and important files that will help you keep your workspace tidy.

More drawer means less space.

The maximum depth it should be is 4 inches or you’re going to lose too much leg room.

Stylistically, deeper drawers are positioned to the bottom of the desk, adjacent to the legs, and shallower drawers closer to the top, above the knees.

What about if you have two monitors?

The average monitor is around 24 inches so you need a desk that’s going to be at least 50 inches.

You may need some extra if you can so it’s not too cramped.

What size desk do I need for 3 monitors?

Three monitors, eh?

Maybe you’re a graphic designer or you play a lot of computer games…

Whatever it is, you need a desk that’s going to be able to accommodate all of those pixels.

You’re using the 24 inch monitors for sake of argument.

To get the best effect, you’ll be angling them at approximately 120° which means you’ll be able to fit in a smaller desk than if they were sat flat.

A desk that’s around 63 inches will fit three monitors comfortably.

This desk could be straight if you have enough room or it could be an L-shape desk with the monitors placed in the corner.
