Bedroom Interior Design: The (Actionable) Guide To Excellence

The internet has given humanity many great things, it’s advanced us as a species beyond recognition. Right up until the moment you needed advice on bedroom design that is. Unfortunately, at that point, it fell off a cliff.

I Needed to Make a Useful Guide

I was red in the face, with steam spewing from my ears as I trawled through list after list of the most ridiculously lavish bedrooms money could buy. Most of the page titles read like the one below:

Clicking through to the website shows you pictures of millionaire-owned bedrooms. Don’t get me wrong, they’re amazing. But that’s the problem. There are only so many times I can be impressed before I get frustrated at not being able to see bedrooms similar to my own.

We often swing our cloaks around, slide on the curly wigs and slam the hammer down on ourselves as we judge other people’s lives as being perfect. We only get to see the highlight reel and assume they’re getting along perfectly. Why aren’t I?

This is a similar issue. Those who own the websites don’t really want to help their reader they just want to make them feel uncomfortable and jealous. Are there more powerful emotions at play when it comes to buying products? I’m not sure.

Look at this:

The aim before starting this article was to create the best resource online for bedroom styling. It’s aimed at individuals just starting out, who have great taste but don’t know where to begin. The advice will be practical and you’ll be able to shift furniture around your bedroom once you have that lightbulb moment.

I’m just an ordinary guy who wants to help show that interior design can be learned and it can be applied.

Here’s how I’ll do that:

Think of this article as a skyscraper in New York City. It’s halfway through being built, there are cranes swinging and workers in yellow vests and hard hats sawing and drilling. It’s a work in process and it’s going to take time but it’ll be the tallest skyscraper in town.

Each section will be concise and to the point. I don’t like fluff.

To start with, there will be a blank 3D bedroom.  Then, after an explanatory paragraph on how the element fits into improving the bedroom (color, furniture arrangement, etc), I’ll add the element to the model and show you how it works.

Finding out what doesn’t work is just as important. I’ll show you that too.

What’s Your Flavor?

Businesses analyze their current customers so they can better predict what future ones will be like and how their behavior can be influenced in the future. We need to do something similar here.

To create your ideal bedroom, you first have to know what your ideal bedroom is. It’s time to define your style.

How to Find Your Interior Design Style

Pinterest is the go-to website for this sort of design planning.

You need to think of Pinterest as an image search engine, it’s not really social media in the traditional sense.

Now, it’s time to collect pictures of bedrooms. I can’t promise people won’t think you’re a creep if they find your stash.

It’s not just the bed you’re looking for here. Each element that fits into the whole – it’s all about the details.

Save as many pictures as you can, it doesn’t matter if one bedroom has a style of French Renaissance and another Industrial.

There’s a reason you like each of them so it’s important to be introspective, ask yourself which parts are working for you and which aren’t.

Above is a search for Bohemian Bedrooms.

I’ve highlighted the rug on the right, the plants on high shelving along with the classic wooden bed frame and more hanging plants because I’m obvious.

Here’s another with Industrial Bedrooms.

I’m a big fan of the individual pictures of the wall above the bed, I suppose you could call it a gallery wall.

The piping that’s used to support the shelving is great and a nice contrast.

I’m a big fan of the hairpin leg nightstand. The air can flow and breathing is easy. If there’s anything I love most in this world it’s breathing.

The bed that’s made from what I can only assume are crates looks awesome. It’s an extended platform bed with extra storage underneath so you can neatly tuck everything away.

Just carry on. Find as many pictures as you’re willing to.

A pattern will begin to emerge after an hour or two and your ideal bedroom will start to morph into existence.

What questions can you ask yourself?

  • I really like bedroom rugs
  • Wow, I need to get some of my own artwork
  • Plants are a reason to live

Get those in a list. It doesn’t matter if they don’t all fit into the same category. You’re encouraged to let loose and go with the flow. Once you feel like you’ve come to a natural conclusion in your search, put a circle round the items and funiture.

Congratulations.

You’ve discovered your style.

Name Your Style

Give it a name that you can use to make the whole thing a bit more concrete. Be as ridiculous as you like, this is meant fun. If you enjoy spirals and smokestacks, you can call it Spiral Hard: Smokestack With a Vengence.

Test your new style by decorating a portion of the room with some items you expect to use through the rest of the bedroom. If you like what you’ve produced then fantastic.

On the same piece of paper you made your style list with, walk around your bedroom and mark down the items you believe can already be included. If you want to get a new bed at some point, then write it down and start saving, not all of these changes need to be immediate.

If you don’t feel confident mixing and matching furniture items from different styles or you want to keep everything within a single theme then have a read of these guides we’ve created on different design styles:

Let’s take a look at what to expect from the average American bedroom.

The Average Bedroom Size

Different types of bedrooms get used for different purposes. The owners of the house get the Master Bedroom because they spent the money, family members get the guest bedrooms for when they visit at Christmas and the children get the smallest bedrooms to minimize the damage their wall drawings will do to the paintwork.

These, along with other factors including the property’s location within the country as well as within its neighborhood add up to create an average bedroom size. The average size in an apartment is 132 square feet and in a home it’s 219 square feet.

What’s the Ideal Bed to Bedroom Ratio?

Have you heard of the golden ratio? It’s a mathematical ratio that is found throughout the natural world, some examples of it in practice include: the helix of DNA molecules, flower petals formation, and spiral galaxies.

After doing some research into the perfect ratio, it’s become apparent that bed arrangement has its own golden ratio. It’s 3:1. This means for every three parts bedroom you should aim for one part bed. This includes furniture and having enough room to walk.

Bedroom Colors and Their Moods

As you walk into your bedroom, your brain is going to immediately absorb the visual information like a sponge and convert it into conscious and subconscious thoughts. This is where room color psychology becomes important.

I’m going to use some pseudoscience but I think my guess work is based on sound facts – colors are signals the brain uses as a way to quickly determine what emotions it believes will help you in that moment.

Imagine two hypothetical ancestors walking through the jungle together. They’re trekking through a new patch of jungle with an immense amount of wildlife they’re never seen before all around them. One turns to the other and says, “isn’t that bright red snake cute and cuddly?”

Before the other can respond, ancestor one has attempted a hug the snake and instead received a venomous bite. He drops to the floor and dies, unable to pass on his genes. Ancestor two, however, gives his children the DNA that codes for avoid the snake, red is dangerous.

This snake feels like human for breakfast

You see how this works?

The converse to this danger is tranquil blue. Water is the life giver of every organism on Earth and, so far, The Universe.

You are in the desert, desperate for a drink with lips cracking and eyes burning when you reach the top of another sand dune only this time you come across an oasis. Can you imagine the joy that would bring you and how much stress would float from your shoulders?

We understand how necessary water is and our association is with the color blue. Paint your walls in azure and you’ll be able to harness this serenity for yourself.

The serpent’s antichrist

I recently came across a survey that was conducted by Travelodge, a hotel chain, about people’s bedroom color preference and how that affects their quality of sleep or other aspects of their lives which I’ll describe below. The colors I’ve added are taken from real bedroom, I used a color eyedropper tool, found the hex code and saved the swatch.

Blue is the Calmest Color

As I’ve already touched upon, blue invokes a sense of calm and can be used to make your bedroom peaceful. If you choose blue for your walls, you’ll put yourself in with a fighting chance of sleeping soundly.

Blue walls correlated with having the longest night’s sleep on average, at seven hours and 52 minutes. What a lovely length of time, I’m not jealous at all, but if the recommended number of hours we sleep is eight, what does that say about humanity? It’s time to get to bed.

Yellow
Transport yourself to living on an island. There’s only so much crystal clear blue water can influence your good times, you need some of that glorious sun too. I live somewhere that has seasonal weather, and that’s saying it kindly. We get a 3-week summer if we’re lucky. Even in the short amount of time, it’s amazing to see how much happier everyone is when the sun does shine. Those few weeks are incredible though.

I believe that’s why yellow comes in at second place. Happiness.

Green
Perhaps green is near the top because it takes us back to the woods when we were mere hunter-gatherers. All I can do is speculate but regardless, people enjoy coloring their bedrooms with it. This is illustrated by 22 percent favoring it in the survey.

Silver
Those who like to live their life in luxury probably have a lot of silver jewelry. I’m not sure if that’s you or not but if it is, maybe it’s time to step up the bling and let it envelope you like you’re slowly putting your face under water.

There’s a clinical feel to this style. It’s not my cup of tea but as it comes in at number four on the list, apparently it is to a lot of people’s tastes.

Orange
It appears there is a satisfactory evidence to suggest that orange aids digestion. I can’t be certain whether it will slow yours down if yours currently moves too fast or if it will speed it up if it’s currently going too slow. At this stage, it doesn’t matter. Maybe you’ve tried herbal drinks and they don’t seem to work, you now have another option.

It’s a warm color and helps your muscles relax.

Purple
When I think of purple bedrooms, I think of crazy. This seems to correlate with the facts which state that purple bedroom dwellers seem to have the shortest sleep out of all of those surveyed. I’m not sure what comes first, the crazy or the color.

It’s a mentally stimulating color which probably means you’ll have some intense pre-sleep thoughts about what tomorrow will bring.

Dark Brown
The dream of having dark brown bedroom makes you envisage a great log cabin up in the mountains with snow all around. It seems the reality of the situation is dark brown is more motel than mountain.

Participants from the survey suggested the color made them feel alone and made them agitated.

Gray
To the rest of the bedroom colors, gray is the ugly cousin of silver. Less luxurious than its counterpart which perhaps explains why most of the people with gray on the walls registered themselves as spending the most time online shopping. Trying to make up for something.

Red
Counterintuitively, red was reported as having the least correlation with romance. Inhabitants were presumably more fearful than they were passionate.

How to Arrange Your Bedroom Furniture, Whatever the Room Size

We all have skills of one sort or another, but many people don’t have the inate ability to visualise spaces and therefore plan a room layout.  For those who don’t feel confident to ‘freestyle’ with their room room layouts, this section is for you. The aim is to give you enough basic pointers so that, after you have read this, you will be able to make a start at arranging your bedroom furniture to maximise the space in whatever way is important to you.

As every room size and layout may be different it is difficult to cover every possibility, but the basic principles will hold true, generally.  To this end we can start with the minimum considered practical for each bed size.

If you go in search of bed sizes you will find quite a range of alternative interpretations across a number of bed and mattress websites.  Just for clarity the basis for size measurement used below are : USA – inches and feet and inches; UK – millimetres (and feet and inches); Europe (Ikea) – centimetres.

BedU.S.UK Europe
Small Single30” x 75”2’6” x 6’3” (750 x 1900)75 x 190 cms
Standard Single39″ x 75″3’ x 6’3” (910 x 1900)
Ikea (EU) Single 2’6” x 6’6”90 x 200 cms
US Twin39″ x 75″ 97 x 189 cms
US Full54″ x 75″
Standard Double 4’6″ x 6’3″135 x 190 cms
Ikea (EU) Double 4’7” x 6’6”140 x 200 cms
US Queen60″ x 80″ 152 x 202 cms
UK King 5’0″ x 6’6″150 x 200 cms
US King76″ x 80″ 193 x 203 cms
UK Super King 6’0″ x 6’6″180 x 200 cms
Ikea (EU) King 5’2” x 6’6”160 x 200 cms
California King72″ x 84″ 183 x 213 cms
Ikea (EU) Super King 6’0” x 6’6”180 x 200 cms

Don’t make the mistake of using the sizes above as your overall bed size. The bed sizing is actually the mattress size and bed linen will always be made to fit those mattress sizes.

The overall size of the bed frame itself will generally be larger because the frame fits outside the dimensions of the mattress.  Always check the external dimensions of your chosen bed before you buy to make sure you aren’t going to short change yourself on available space in the bedroom.

What are the Minimum Legal Bedroom Sizes?

Generally, it seems to be agreed in most US Building Codes (and in the UK under the Housing Act 1985) that the minimum a single bedroom should be, to be classed as such, will have a floor space of between 50sqft and 70sqft and a ceiling height of 7’6”.

Property sizes are determined using the following criteria, as outlined by the UK Housing Act 1985 Section 325:

  • Double occupancy room: 110sqft+
  • Single occupancy room: 50ft2 – 70ft2
  • Uninhabitable room: <50ft2

Rooms smaller than 50ft2 are categorised as ‘uninhabitable’ as they can only be inhabited by a child under the age of 10.

Obviously there are many instances you may have heard about (or come across yourself) in the major cities around the world, where a glorified (large) cupboard is included in the sales particulars for a flat or apartment as being a bedroom space.  Somewhat bending the rules, although the Building Codes and other countries legislation is intended for new housing to ensure minimum standards.

So, from the above a Single Room would be up to 7’ x 10’, 2.1 x 3.05 cms, and would allow a single adult to call the room their bedroom.  This size of room would not allow for more than a Standard Single bed if you wanted to have a minimum level of storage and be able to to change/make the bed and get in and out of it without being impeded.

Furniture Arrangements for Small Rooms

Dependent upon the room structural layout the most likely standard furniture layout will be to have the bed into a corner of the room.  As a single room you are only concerned about 1 person getting in and out of 1 side of the bed.

With the bed pushed into the corner opposite the entrance door it allows for there to be enough space to incorporate a single wardrobe at the foot of the bed (you are looking for space for accessing the wardrobe and making the bed, not full passage passed the bed).

The wardrobe can be freestanding or you could create a built-in arrangement which could go floor to ceiling. You will also have sufficient space for a bedside cabinet on which to place a bedside light and a chest of drawers for clothes.

Alternatively, if you did feel that there was enough storage with all the other elements as mentioned, it might even be possible to use 2 lower level drawer cabinets with a worktop to span them and create a compact desk arrangement without it crowding the room.

If you choose the right bed frame you can then include undermount storage drawers beneath the bed to provide even more storage.

With enough storage sorted out there is still a reasonable amount of wall space available to use wisely.

As you can see from the alternative furniture arrangements shown in the following images the way you arrange your furniture will have a marked effect on the ‘feel’ of the room.

Bedroom furniture positioning is determined by a number of factors including the position of any entrance doors or built-in cupboard, the window or windows and any radiators.  Of course, there are other aspects of any room which will influence it’s usability including the position of any power outlets and the type of lighting , but those things can be adjusted and upgraded if necessary.  Structural alterations to move doors and windows, on the other hand, are a little more intrusive.

On the matter of domestic heating systems there is a marked difference between homes in the U.S. and those in the UK.  A large majority of U.S. homes are heated by hot air systems, whether from a central furnace and ducted around the home into each room, or from hot air/cooler units for individual rooms.  The UK homes, to an even larger majority than in the U.S., use central heating systems where the room is heated via a radiator.

With metal radiators they are generally positioned on or near a wall and this means that the area of wall available for positioning furniture is somewhat reduced.  In ducted air homes those issues don’t exist in such a restrictive way because you are simply accommodating the position of the air outlet.

The General Layout Of A 7’ x 10’ Bedroom

This would be the likely ‘standard’ furniture arrangement you might find in a single sized room, with the bed pushed into the corner opposite the door entrance.  The door is shown hung on the right, which means it opens into the room and probably takes up more space than if it were hung on the left and opening against the wall.

Sleep Tight, Don’t Let The Bed Bugs Bite

As the bed is the focal point of the room, it dictates how the rest of the space behaves. The first decision you need to make is on where the balance can be established. How much space are you going to leave on each side of the bed? How high off the ground would you like the frame to be? How much walkway do you need to be comfortable navigating the rest of the bedroom? These are the questions you need to ask yourself and only you can answer them because they rely on personal taste and room dimensions.

Measure the width of your bedroom and place some tape down so you know the proportions within your bedroom. then have a look at the measurements of the potential beds you want to buy. Don’t forget the feet of the bed too, some of them stick out a bit waiting for you to bang your toes on them.

Most people aim for a symmetrical layout as it’s the easiest way to produce great balance for a bedroom. Symmetry can be emphasized with two bedside tables but you could always add another object that isn’t traditional furniture if you’re planning on some unconventional symmetry to create balance.

Examples of Great Beds

In this example from Workadaylolcat, you can see they’ve gone for symmetry either side of their bed. I think it’s really important to note that symmetry doesn’t have to mean that both sides need to have exactly the same furniture. The plant and the guitar both draw the attention of your eye equally and therefore create a fantastic balance.

This bedroom has a very definite color palette going on and you can easily jump to the next one in the sequence. The bed plays a big role in bringing it all together in the mid-tones.

m

I chose to include this picture as an example, not only of symmetry, but also a contrast of the color between the predominantly light decor of the bedroom and the dark headboard and bed frame. There’s even spacing along the left, foot, and right side of the bed too.

Most people naturally buy wooden beds, it’s a softer look and works well with the other furnishings in the bedroom which are likely also wooden. The other option are metal beds, which excel in bedrooms that have very industrial decor – exposed brickwork and ventilation pipes on show, you know the type.

I usually only go for wooden framed beds because I prefer the style and haven’t furnished my homes in any industrial decor. One of the most unfortunate aspects of metal bed frames tends to be the the bars that make up the headboards. God they annoy me. I hate the way I just slide into the gaps are the bars dig into my back. Worst massage ever.

Reddit user Alecd93’s bedroom

Talking of headboards, there is a great opportunity for you to utilise the headboard for decorative purposes. In the picture above, you can see how awesome alecd93’s oversized headboard looks as the room’s centerpiece. It’s also functional, it’s holding teacups.

The Types of Bed Frames

Most beds are built low to the ground these days and are referred to as platform beds. I love them, personally. You do need a bed frame because if you leave the mattress to sit on the floor it’s not going to air out and you will start to get mold growth.

Let’s take a look at each kind individually. Alternatively, you can read a full breakdown of each type of bed frame here.

Platform

Buoquinn’s Platform bed

Platform beds are the modern standard and I’m 93% sure you’ll be buying one next time you purchase a bed frame. This is why:

Someone in a lab with white overalls, spectacles and a calculator has spent years locked away improving mattress technology. Before they began researching, springs were added to the base of the bed frame to support the weight of the mattress and person sleeping on it. Bed frames were raised for this reason and looked bulky.

Now, the springs are being installed into the mattresses themselves. Removing the box springs means the frame can be lowered and it’ll get boring when your friends don’t stop going on about how the wish they had your bed.

Why will your friends be jealous? Platform beds have simple frames, they’re usually made of wood with a lower profile that most traditional styles. They’re unlikely to have a headboard or a footboard but new designs are ready to break the rules all the time.

Lower profile means platform beds sit approximately 12 to 18 inches off the deck so there’s no extra storage space to keep your weekday socks in.

Floating platform bed legs are closer to the center than you’d typically find. Alongside this, there is more of a shelf built around the sides of the bed frame giving the impression that the bed is floating. It’s more of an aesthetic preference than an advancement in build quality.

Sleigh

Sleigh beds aren’t just for Christmas, they’re for life, and this is unfortunate because they’re very ugly.

The frames are bulky and robust mixed with a feminine style of curved headboard and footboard. Wood or upholstery styles the curvature and padded fabric dampens the harshness of the sleigh appearance.

I’ve read articles promoting sleigh beds in rustic bedrooms. I’m not convinced. However, to play devil’s advocate, I think it’s the contrast in styles between the coarse brick, fire, and leather of the home compared to the slightly more effeminate bed frame.

Four poster/canopy

Ahh, the regal four-poster. Larger than your average bed – maybe it’s because of our perceptions of kings and queens frequenting them or perhaps it’s their size that attracted royalty in the first place. The truth is, I don’t know.

Four posts protrude from the base of the bed frame and connect to each other at the top. The posts and connective ligaments can be decorated and some have curtains to provide privacy. If you’re aiming for luxury, consider a four-poster bed. If you aren’t, then I would leave it well alone if I were you.

The sheer mass of the four-poster bed means you need a big bedroom to accommodate one comfortably. It’s very easy to make them look tacky so be careful when designing your room.

How to Choose Bed Sheets

There’s no point having a great bed if you don’t have great bed sheets, is there?

I bet you know know what awful bed sheets are too. Rough and scratchy over your skin.

You need bed sheets that will improve your sleep so you wake up ready to attack the world with whatever your chosen weapon may be.

Advising on the colors or pattern of your bed linen is tricky. Each room is different and a context is key. There are some general rules you can follow to set you on the right track though.

When you hear or read about the thread count, it’s referring to the number of threads woven in a square inch. A lower thread count will give a rougher feel. The bad news is it’ll feel like coarse pumice stone but the good news is that all of your dead skin will be exfoliated.

I’m not saying you need to spend thousands on the finest silk but buy quality nonetheless. Where is the quality threshold? A thread count of over 600 should do the trick.

Keep the color and styling simple to begin with, meaning a mid-tone gray, navy blue or white. They’re pretty much guaranteed to match with any other decor in the room and a block color or very light herringbone pattern will look great.

The softest and warmest duvet fills are bird plumage.  Goose down or similar species and will keep you feeling more protected from the outside world than a joey in its mother’s pouch. If you’re allergic to natural products there are synthetic alternatives that work well or even wool.

Put your own style on things by layering throws and covers on top of the bedding. Autumn clothes fashion looks the best for the same reason. Each layer adds its own spark to the outfit without dominating. A visual balance. Adding high quality throws to the foot of the bed can make it look so good if you do it right.

Mattress Types Comparison

Memory Foam
Would you like to know what it feels like to lay on a cloud? If you get yourself a memory foam mattress then you’ll be able to. They’re well known now for being more comfortable than even cats experience when they sit next to a warm fire.

A lot of people buy memory foam mattresses because they relieve a lot of back pain. I’m not a doctor, nor am I a physiotherapist so I’m not going to tell you it’s going to cure you. I will, however, say that if you enjoy soft mattresses when you sleep then I’m confident you will love the memory foam mattress option.

SomniGel
SomniGel has the opposite in bounce-back abilities. It’s great for people who prefer a firmer sleep. You can also shut that window, you don’t need the cool breeze any longer. The way that the SomniGel mattresses are manufactured means that they’re able to disperse heat efficiently and allows you to drift off pleasantly.

Innerspring
Transport yourself back to the five year old you jumping on your bed. Can you remember the feeling of springs pushing back against the soles of your feet? That’s the classic innerspring mattress for you.

Some of the older mattress technology on the market now, innerspring is advantageous over many types because of its cheaper price. You won’t be sleeping on nails but there is still a higher possibility of malfunctioning, leading to a less than favorable time.

Bed Placement Within the Bedroom

Here’s how you should position your bed to attract more joy in your life.

People have been debating for hundreds of years about feng shui of the bedroom so I’m going to stand on the shoulders of giants and use their wisdom.

  • The first rule of bed positioning is no one talks about bed positioning. Ahh, apologies. No, that’s Fight Club. People do discuss bed positioning. Specifically, they say you’re not to have a gap between the bed and the wall. It’s even more important not to have the bed sat diagonally in the room.
Gapless

The reason for this is the feeling of security. Have you ever sat in the middle of a room with no one else in the house and still felt like someone was standing over your shoulder? It makes my skin crawl. Nobody needs that when they have work in the morning.

Perfectly flush with the wall
  • The next rule is avoid the Coffin Position.

The coffin position refers to having the feet facing the door as you’re lying in bed, however, the negativity surrounding the law extends to any door that faces the bed. It’s tough to stick to if you have a small bedroom but you have to work with what you’ve got.

  • If you’re lucky enough to live in a converted barn with more beam than you know what to do with, at least make sure you don’t place your bed underneath them.

Beams under the bed create an oppressive feeling. The larger and wider the beam, the more downward pressure being felt within the room, much like you’re in a jail cell. Now all we need to do is figure out if you stole some bread to feed your hungry family or if you committed a far worse crime.

  • Even though a lot of good comes from windows, so does a lot of bad and you want to separate this from your bed as much as possible.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had the displeasure of hearing people drunkenly arguing outside my bedroom at 3am and that’s with a good distance between my bed and the window. Imagine how bad it would be if I was closer to the source.

It’s not just noises that enter through the window. There’s also smells like cigarettes or dampness from the air that can linger around the area.

  • The last of the rules is not to have the head of the bed on the same side of the room as the door, toilet or kitchen (if you have a studio apartment)

The bedroom door should always be seen from the bed. If that isn’t an option for your space then make sure that you don’t put the head of the bed on the same side of the room as the door.

The louder the sounds, the heavier the movements and the bigger the vibrations, the worse your sleep will be. This is even more apparent if you’re living with other people and they have a very creaky door that wakes you up each morning. I swear I’m not bitter. To remedy these potentially troublesome signals, you could buy a heavy headboard absorb most of the vibration and noise from nearby areas.

Bad feng shui radiates from the bathroom in particular. Flushing the toilet, nasty bacteria even when you clean everything properly and mold feasting on all the moisture from the shower. Those ensuites aren’t looking so good now, are they?

I’m not feng shui expert but I’ve also heard whispers that fire energy from the kitchen appliances can cause insomnia and so avoiding that as much as possible is of course advised.

Choosing a Bedroom Wardrobe

Most of us aren’t rich which means most of us don’t have walk-in wardrobes. Therefore, we’ve got to settle for the standard wooden oblong that sits opposite your bed. Brilliant news though, you can still make sure your wardrobes look awesome.

Most people tend to match the wood that their wardrobe is made from with their bed but this doesn’t have to be the case. Not all of the trees in the woods are the same and your bedroom furniture doesn’t have to be either.

If you take the time to decide on the species and style you want you can mix furnishings in hundreds of ways. Individuality and an eclectic style will make your room feel casual with a relaxing atmosphere. Matching can become clinical and removes personality.

As well as measuring the height, width, and depth of the wardrobe, you need to know how much space is needed for the doors to open 90 degrees. Many years ago I bought a wardrobe that smashed right into the bed. Let me tell you, those were dark days. Don’t be like inexperienced me. The wardrobe proportions need to have the correct size, so think carefully about whether you’re going to buy a 2-door, 3-door or 4-door wardrobe.

Once you’ve decided on the size of the wardrobe, it’s time to begin thinking about its form and function. If there’s only a small area to work with you may be better off with sliding-doors wardrobe. Pretend you’re an alien character in Star Trek that’s just walked into the canteen for some intergalactic cuisine.

What sort of storage do you need? Are most of your clothes suitable for putting on hangers or are you like Simon Cowell and only own one very low cut V-neck t-shirt? Medieval knights used to stack their swords ready for mortal combat at a moment’s notice. Today the modern man is ready to slay the next boardroom business deal and to do so needs well–ironed, crisp white shirts. Times have changed but the necessity remains the same.

On that note, what could be more frustrating than folding your clothes neatly, placing them into your wardrobe’s shelving units and them not being deep enough. Your clothes hit the back wall and take the full force, turning them into their cotton crumple zones.

There’s one type of wardrobe that flies under the radar and that’s the open storage option. They’re not really any different from the kind of rails seen on shop floors. As long as you don’t mind your belongings out for everyone and their aunt to see they’re a great minimalist alternative – perhaps you should keep your underwear somewhere sacred though.

Mirrored wardrobes are a popular choice because you’re able to maximize the light, space, and function of your bedroom in one go. Mirrors reflect natural and artificial light so it doesn’t just get absorbed into your walls and if there’s anything that makes people happier, it’s a bright room. Extra light will make the room feel bigger too but, in addition, a mirror lies to your naive brain telling it there are more places to walk about in.

Function is maximized because the space that’s needed for a separate mirror is now available for something else. Art, plants or even an accent chair if you had a large independent mirror.

I used to have a mirrored wardrobe and one piece of advice I can give you is not to have the mirror next your pillow. You’re guaranteed to wake up on the weekend, with your eyes staring back into your soul, and a montage will begin sequencing every poor decision you made that week.

It’s tough on the stress levels and I’m all about damage control.

Wardrobe Dimensions

Wardrobes are like people, they come in all shapes and sizes. They are, however, still wardrobes. This is a good thing as it gives you a good idea of what dimensions you’ll need for your bedroom. Wardrobe height usually has an upper limit of 72 inches so you can hang your suit pants without having the ankles sitting in a crumpled heap.

The width obviously depends on how much space you have and how much can be allocated to the wardrobe. It’ll be at least 30 inches otherwise there isn’t much point in having a one because most of your clothes will be thrown on the floor anyway.

Lastly, the depth. We know the height so your suit pants fit but what about the jacket with the powerful looking padded shoulders? Most wardrobes are around 24 inches deep so if you happen to be wider than that then double-check the specifications.

What’s an armoire?

An armoire is really just a fancy word for a wardrobe that can move. It’s a throwback to the 17th century when you needed to bring all of your belongings, including the furniture, with you. They’re typically ornate which is understandable once you appreciate their French origins. They look extravagant and would definitely need to become the centerpiece of your bedroom if you bought one.

Bedroom wardrobe handles

A cheap way of improving the look of wardrobes (and other pieces of furniture) is to change their handles. It’s not something that’s done very often so you’ll be one-upping everyone else if you do it.

What do you need to consider when thinking about wardrobe handles? You have to be able to use them. That’s first and foremost. If you’re opening the doors 20 times a day (I hope you aren’t opening them 20 times a day), they need to be comfortable and have some of that sweet, sweet ergonomic design.

I hear your arguments, there are more important things to buy and you’d be correct. If you have the cash to splash though and you’re at the stage in your bedroom design where you can add the finishing touches then have the confidence to do so. Buy a couple of different sets within your price range so you can see what each look like when they’ve been screwed in.

Wardrobe handles are a great place to add small amounts of contrast to the room. If you have a light wardrobe, pick out some darker handles so the eye is drawn towards them. Additionally, the same style of handles across various items of furniture give you the opportunity to add repetition. This gives the brain an anchor point.

Modern Wardrobe Designs For Bedroom

Bingo. I’ve found the phrase that produces the most annoying results when entered into Google. If you’re looking for advice then, unfortunately, you won’t find any here. The combination of words is: “modern wardrobe designs for bedroom”.

I’ll estimate there’s a rough 50:50 split in the search results. Half of them are for ecommerce stores and the other half are listicles of the most outrageous luxury that no one can buy.

The ecommerce stores are frustrating because they look like they’ll help you whilst you’re in Google and the listicles are awful unless you want to feel bad about yourself. No ordinary man, woman and especially child has the chance of owning a walk-in wardrobe with a built-in leather bound seat.

So what does make a modern wardrobe, a modern wardrobe? One thing is clear, people love to convert their support walls into opportunities for keeping t-shirts. Creative and artistic types like to use the wardrobe as a feature wall with abstract shapes and distinct colors. The rest enjoy subtlety, there doesn’t appear to be an in between.

Bedroom nightstand

After the apocalypse has taken everything you love away from you, the bedside table will be your third most missed item from the Simpler Times. Of course, nothing beats the bed. That’s number one. Surprisingly you are doing just fine without a sofa. No, it’s the fridge that comes next. Post-apocalypse, the only food you’ll find will have begun its decomposition process and the smell’s atrocious. Third is the nightstand.

It’s really difficult to choose a nightstand. Here, we’ve broken downeverything you need to know so you can buy some that compliment your bedroom’s decor.

The bastard knew everything about you. It held your books (don’t read anymore, too busy starving), held your phone (what’s a phone?), held your light (the stars are your light now). The bedside table reminds you of the good times that didn’t involve nuclear warfare. You see now why choosing the right ones are so important. Enjoy them whilst you have them.

What’s out there then? What can satisfy your insatiable need for furniture that sits next to your pillows?

Chest of drawers

The chest of drawers work for the lazy who want to be able to get out of the shower, sit on the bed and put their socks on in one lethargic movement. These are probably the largest of the bedside table options.

Nightstand

Dainty, but my personal favorite. The nightstand is understated but packs a punch. In contrast to the chest of drawers, the nightstand is smallest of the bunch but does everything you need without pretending to be something it’s not.

Miniature bookcase

I suppose you could think of the miniature bookcase as an in between of the above styles. This is your opportunity to show how cultured you are by placing only the most interesting and wacky books you have picked up on your travels. Throw in a trinket too for added zest.

How do you choose what you want?

Space is obviously an important factor. When you think about the visual balance of a bedroom you have to weigh up your options of having one or two bedside tables that are placed either side of the bed. How many items will it hold? Will there be a lonely lamp or will you have a man-draw to hold forever unused watch batteries?

Most people prefer to keep identical bedside tables because it’s easier to maintain a satisfactory design with symmetrical furniture. This doesn’t mean it can’t be achieved with different bedside tables, it’s just harder.

On a similar note to space, how much storage is available throughout the rest of your bedroom? Is there any point in getting a chest of drawers sitting next to the bed if there’s already one sitting next to the wardrobe?

Of course, the aesthetics of the design are very important. You have to like what you’re buying. Ask yourself, how weird am I? You need to let it out in the same way Alien ruptures through an unsuspecting victim’s diaphragm.

A rich man or woman might spend $5000 on the most beautiful nightstand that we mere mortals could only dream of having the pleasure to witness the sight of in real life. But if the bedside table is too tall or too short and you can’t reach the lamp when you’re ready to go to sleep, you’re going to be annoyed. Angry every single night. You’ll own your nightstand for a long time so that’s a massive dose of unnecessary stress in your life.

The solution is to make sure you buy one that’s approximately two inches above or below the height of your mattress. If you want to reach all the way across to the other side of the bedside table a top tip is to measure the length of your arm to see how far you can stretch as well.

Although this photo doesn’t show what kind of symmetry the owner has designed for, it’s great for gaining a sense of how the bedside table can paired with other items. The variations in tone from the mirror brings the chest of drawers and the window bench together nicely.

It’s a great bedside table and is probably the largest I’d go when buying one.

How cool is this bed? This is obviously a very minimalist style but I wanted to show an example of how a bedroom can look great with asymmetrical components. Also, a shout out to the headboard, that is spectacular. As is the hammock.

Nightstand With a Hidden Drawer

I’m sure you love your spouse, really I do. But, don’t tell me they aren’t annoying from time to time. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had chocolate when I’m in bed (after brushing my teeth, sue me) and as soon as my girlfriend lays her eyes on it there’s electricity in the air. I can feel the spark before even looking at her.

I’ll turn around, very slowly. I try not to disturb the beast but it’s always too late. In a split second her pupils dilate and her eyelids close to form a piercing stare focused like a laser on the chocolate. You can see that she’s devouring it in her mind. I’m certain there’s more love for it than for me.

With the click of a finger she’s scrambling over me and snatching at it. There’s nothing scarier than a woman who wants chocolate. Nah. A woman who needs chocolate. She doesn’t mean it but there are punches thrown and nails tearing at flesh. If you look closely you can see a hint of foaming at the mouth too.

In those moments she’s strong. So very strong. Invariably she wins and she grabs the chocolate. Leaving only the trace of a wrapper. Not too dissimilar from how wolves leave only the indigestible bits a carcass.

There was only one thing for it, buy a nightstand with a hidden draw. It was too easy really, she wanted new ones so I seized my opportunity.

I keep the chocolate in the hidden nightstand compartment and when she goes to the bathroom I sneak a piece into my mouth. You know what’s a fun game? Seeing how close I can get to her entering the room again before I eat it. I like to live life on the edge. Guilty as charged. Danger’s face has been laughed at.

Bedroom mirror feng shui

Mirrors are great for covering up your room’s imperfections. There are several feng shui rules you’ll want to make sure your mirror lives by to make the most of the benefits.

Can you see yourself in the reflection of the glass without any distortion from breaks or tiling effects? Good. You won’t increase your charisma by practicing your speeches in a fairground fun house. Use the mirror to draw the eye towards an adjacent and more prominent piece of furniture in the room.

What’s better than having a room with a view? A room with two views. I love to look into the middle distance and in my mind walk through all the ways I’m going to smash my goals on the way to world domination.  If I have two horizons I can scan, it gives me double the determination. I do this by positioning the mirror so I can see the scenery from as many angles within the bedroom as possible. Don’t bother if your only view is aimed at the air vent on the side of a building.

Mirrors are amazing because they amplify the amount of light that bounces and dances across the room. Sometimes it can feel like we sleep in cupboards rather than bedrooms and this will help the room feel larger (who doesn’t want a bigger bedroom?), If you’re really desperate, you can emphasize this by placing the mirror behind a lightsource.

Bedroom Desk and Chair

An estimated 300 million people worldwide are depressed according to the World Health Organization.

That’s a lot of people. We don’t get too much opportunity to be with ourselves these days, it’s important you find your own process to combat mental isolation.

Many find writing to be an oasis for the brain. But hey, even if you aren’t unwell, writing is fun and gets the creative juices flowing.

I have a bad memory. Honestly, it’s a burden. I use my desk to scribble down my thoughts and day-to-day goings on. I don’t do it everyday but make sure I put pen to paper at least once a week to get the main points down.

Keeping a journal means I’ll be able to look back in 20 years and remember what went on when 90% of the memories have faded into the abyss. It’ll be great to read through everything again and remember the great and the not-so-great times.

I bet, like most people, you want to write a book at some point in your life. Practicing your writing now is like an investment for the future, middle age, you.

It’s harder than it looks not to bore people to death when they’re reading what you’ve written.

Identify why you’ll use your desk.

If you want to use a computer instead of ye olde ink, it needs to plug its wires into the sockets so it can survive off the nourishing life-juice coming out of the walls.

Work out what height you prefer when you’re writing or typing, there’s nothing worse than being hunched over yourself. Cramped and nerve-pinchingly uncomfortable.

For a bedroom or, to be honest, any home office desk, it’s better to keep it simple. As the saying goes, a tidy desk is a tidy mind. A simple desk means you know where everything is and it’s much easier to maintain. An elaborate construction is an unnecessary distraction.

Desks need to be a quality hardwood.

Dropping a mug on them won’t even make a dent. Many have very beautiful colors and unique grains. However, please be cautious. Some species are very rare from deforestation because of these exact qualities.

Here are some examples of great hardwoods that produce amazing desks: cherry, elm, mahogany, maple, rosewood, rosewood, teak and walnut. Alternatively, oak, beech, and birch have complementary stains which can be utilized to manipulate the wood’s appearance to look like the best hardwoods on the market. You can sleep easy knowing that you helped save the environment too.

How tall should a desk be?

I should ask myself this question each time I sit at a new table, which is more often than one expects. However, a sure way to lose friends is to get a tape measure from my back pocket and start sizing up the legs. Unfortunately, I often find myself at desks way too low for my height (6ft thank you very much) and, before I know it, an uncomfortable ache between my ribs shows up out of the blue. Uninvited. In fact, it’s actively discouraged. The ache is dull but, man, it’s effective at making me lose my mind. It’s like a small person is poking me from the inside and no matter what shape I contort my body into, it’s never relieved.

Maybe you’ve had something similar?

Tables that are too high have their own issues too. You’ll have definitely experienced this if you’ve tried to type on a computer but couldn’t quite find that comfortable spot. You forearms rest against the edge of the table and the wood reaches the bone in the forearm with ease. Digging in until you’re forced to shift your arms an inch and begin the process again on fresh skin.

What’s a desk used for?

A desk is a piece of furniture that us humans have invented to help communicate with each other through the medium of written word. They’re flat and smooth, the perfect combination for showing off your best handwriting. This is important to prevent you from accidentally insulting someone when they misinterpret you.

Styles of desks

Writing desk – The more minimalist the desk, the better.

A tidy desk is a tidy mind.

Remove the clutter and you’ll write a million words in no time. You’ve turned into Mr Efficient, they’re going to make a superhero movie about you now.

Computer desk – Computer desks have the most space as a throwback to when everyone used to have massive hard drives and monitors. Hardware takes a lot of room.

Desktops are for the gamers. For those of you who still own one and are in desperate need of not playing on the floor, there are plenty of amazing looking desks to choose from.

Don’t worry, the gun’s a replica

Bedroom Accent Chair

You can either join the CIA or you can buy an accent chair.

These are the only two options available if you want to create drama in your life. Admittedly, I’d also like to be in the CIA but I have terrible knees. I wouldn’t be able to catch anyone. If you fall short of the prerequisites to become a spy then buckle up, baby! The chair’s coming for ya.

Not everyone has the space to own a bedroom chair capable of holding yesterday’s clothes. I’m especially bad for this. I’ll go into my bedroom when I’m ready to sleep and instead of being smart and folding everything away neatly, it gets launched onto the nearest, cleanest surface. If you’ve landed the big time, I’ll teach you how to design your room with one in it. They aren’t just any old chairs though. They’re accent chairs.

Accent chairs aren’t known as much for their functionality and that should be at the forefront of your mind. Their purpose is to add style and complement the decor of a room. They’re the suave foreign guy at your work who has an abundance of flair and attracts anyone he meets. Let them draw the focus of the room, it’s what they were born to do. Allowing accent chairs to be the focal point of your bedroom means picking a distinctive color and/or choosing unusual upholstery.

You could go all in and get yourself a bedroom sofa. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love you for it. Use it as your very own therapy chair, draping yourself across. I can’t help you decide who will sit on the other side of the couch and listen to your troubles though. It won’t be me. However, if you’ve never attempted to work with accent furniture before then start small.

Starting small means beginning with an armchair or side chair. It’ll be easier to match with the rest of the room if the chair isn’t stylized in any way. Remember, it has to be unique and stand out.

How do you get something that’s supposed to be original (and to make heads spin with excitement) to match everything else in your bedroom?

Here’s an example. When designing your bedroom (or any room), add a secondary or tertiary color to the color scheme. Imagine for a moment you applied a hint of orange amongst mostly blue walls, you’ll be able to add an orange chair that matches those tones. It’s going to compliment the blue and pull those oranges together in what can only be described as a perfect harmony. An orchestral delight. The chair won’t feel isolated.

Have you already made a confident stride into accent furniture? You probably started with the furniture material having a single block color but now you’re ready to be even bolder. People like being around bold. It shows you have something to offer them.

This means transforming into the Patternator. It’s very similar to the Terminator except the red robot eye is searching for the best swatches rather than human flesh. Disclaimer: Do not sew your soft, padded chair up with anyone’s skin. You’ll go to jail and you won’t be able to appreciate the bedroom you’ve created.

Bedroom chair hammock

Is there anything more slothful than a hammock chair? In fact, I think even a sloth would look at you and put its hands together in a slow, appreciative clap.  Well done you. I’ve taken a moment, looked into the sky thoughtfully and come to the decision that no, no there’s nothing. The hammock wins.

Those of you who have sat in a hammock chair before understand that hammocks have max stats on human comfort levels experienced by the occupants. These days you don’t have to be a surfer or hippie to enjoy them, all you need is the internet and some cash.

They’re usually made from cotton and nylon to be breathable and withstand the weather (hopefully the weather will stay outside your bedroom). The material molds its shape to curve around the body when you sit inside the hammock, so every inch of you is weightless. You’ll be like a pufferfish in the Dead Sea (note: pufferfish don’t live in the Dead Sea).

The chair itself is attached to the ceiling by rope. Only one attachment means the chair will rotate 360° around the axis. However, you can minimize rotation by purchasing one with multiple ropes hooked to the ceiling.

If you prefer a little bit of rigidity in your hanging chairs, you can purchase hanging basket chairs that don’t form around you. You’re able to adjust and wrap into unnatural positions as you can finish the last pages of your book. Because of a favorable design and necessary strength, wicker is the go-to material for hammock chairs.

There are even chairs that stop your back from hurting and improve your posture. You don’t need to walk like Quasimodo anymore

Rugs For Your Bedroom

Why do rugs work? It’s actually a really difficult question to answer. Everyone seems to be in agreement that they do though so there’s got to be something in it.

Regardless, let me help you find the right rug for you.

Each room has multiple colors going on. Hopefully, you’ve made an effort to make sure they complement each other in some way but rugs can be used to pull elements of a color scheme together. They’re part of the peacekeeping party. It’s all about the love, man.

Rugs are usually graphical in some way and, if you choose right, they can be treated as artwork. Even simple designs are aesthetically pleasing, bringing the visual balance towards the center.

Hardwood floors are delightful but they can be a bit clinical and lack personality. The idea with a rug is to inject some of that personality back into the room. If your bedroom is carpeted, make sure you don’t buy a rug that has a large pile.

You need to buy contrasting rugs to the rest of the room. That includes texturally as well as color and pattern. Be careful not to emphasize features that have had their fair share of attention already or it just ends up being overdone.

Unless you have a very large room (lucky you), I suggest you place your rug at the foot of your bed. Turn the rug so the widest edge is facing towards the headboard. Push the rug halfway under the bed and lay the bed back down. This will stop it moving about but, as with all rugs, you can buy some rug pads to stick underneath and prevent any further slipping.

The dimensions of your room obviously dictate the size and shape of your rug. Measure out how big you think the rug needs to be and you’re onto a winner.

Best Rug Material for High Traffic Areas

Unfortunate enough to be within a nuclear fallout zone? Now find yourself with 11 legs? It’s time to think about a rug that can handle that amount of footfall.

A rug’s material can be added to two categories: natural fibers or synthetic. Rugs made of natural fibers are the kind that you want to if you find yourself with more limbs than you can shake a stick at. They’re more durable and are thoughtful enough not to emit any gases, harmful or otherwise, into their surroundings. Natural fiber materials include wool, cotton and silk. On top of this, they’re usually handmade.

Wool rugs are the most popular option because of how tough they are. They’re also extremely proficient at holding onto dye. Lucky. How would we cope without Persian rugs?

Bricks are durable but they aren’t comfortable on your feet. Wool though, man is it soft on the toes. Great for coming home from work, stretching and scrunching your toes into. Feels good. That has to be the most important quality in a rug. The density of wool means that when it’s woven into a rug it can withstand water and other liquids from spilling on it. We all have one clumsy friend who shows up and decides the floor is the new sink.

Lighting for the Bedroom

Set the ambiance of your bedroom with lighting that supplements the overhead lights. This creates amazing light which, at its very core, will make you feel calmer and happier. Layer the lights to produce the effects you want.

Direct lights produce a general effect, task lighting can be used for reading or working and accent lighting is used as a feature of the room to grab the attention.

Direct lighting can be anything from overhead lights to sunlight coming through the windows to strategically placed LEDs. It’s the kind of lighting you need to do chores and isn’t particularly flattering on the bedroom even if it is essential.

Task lighting can be used to start the layering effect you want and altered to match with the mood you’re creating. If you have a chair that you read in or a desk that you write in, don’t forget to include them in your planning and purchasing. The right amount of light in the right place is all that counts.

Accent lighting is where you can get a bit more adventurous. This is where you can play around with different colors and areas of installation. LEDs are great for this sort of thing. A classic example is lining the bottom of the bed with a blue light. There’s a very fine line between this kind of accent lighting looking suave, like James Bond picked it out himself and looking very tacky.

What kinds of lights are there?

You have lamps that sit on your bedside table. They’re simple and easy to get right. We all know what they look like and the intimate lighting they deliver. Overhead lights that look like small street lamps shining down onto your pillows are called sconces. Recessed lighting is are lights hidden from view and create an atmospheric tone to the room. Lone lights that hang from a cord on the ceiling are called pendant lights. Bright and strong, they’re less likely to be used to build ambiance.

Bedroom Wall Art Decor

Art is an extension of your personality and gives you a chance to project your emotions onto a room as well as having your emotions changed (hopefully in a positive way) by the art when you’re near it.

This personal connection and sense of responsibility to choose the right piece can be difficult to get over. Here, we give you some tips on how to pick perfect artwork for your bedroom.

There is art outside of hanging framed black and white photos too. Don’t forget about trinkets from your time in Peru or sculptures of abstract concepts.

It’s important that you don’t just put up art for the sake of it and that instead you pick the art that makes you feel something on the inside. One difficulty I have, and I think a lot of you may identify with this too, is that I feel like I’ll find something better another time. This leads to a doubt in my mind and to me not buying what I actually wanted in the first place. Try to cut this out. I don’t think there are any quick fixes unfortunately other than learning to go with your gut.

My main bedroom art (that will be on the walls) either goes directly above my bed or directly opposite. Hanging art on the opposite wall is dictated by the space that’s available from other furniture. Apparently, any inspiring art should be put opposite the bed, presumably so that when you wake up you’ll be ready the tackle whatever the day has to offer – I choose to believe this.

If I’m hanging art over a bed, for example, I want the space it fills up to be about 55-60% the width of my bed. To get this number, all I need to do is to measure the bed and multiply that number by 0.55 or 0.60 – whichever seems more appropriate for the room. If I’m going to frame my art then obviously that’s going to add another layer of padding that needs to be accounted for.

The art you choose depends on how you decide the room will feel. Just because you’re aiming for a bedroom that relaxes you (if that is in fact what you’re aiming for) doesn’t mean you should avoid bolder colors. You should, however, ensure that they’re complimentary with the rest of the room.

Plants for the Bedroom

You, me and everyone that’s ever lived have ancestors that not only survived but thrived on the plains of Africa. Do you know what there is a lot of on the African continent? Plants.

Not having any makes us miserable. Seriously, we all look like gloomy clowns with dry, cracking face paint with one oversized shoe on. Change this. Don’t be the clown anymore. Replicate our natural state by growing some greenery. They’ll help make the air in your bedroom fresher and the colors will massage your brain. I love plants. My favorite was one a corn palm we called Santiago. He’d sit left of the TV in my apartment’s living room, guarding it with his life. Fiercer than a Rottweiler, yet noble and surprisingly wise.

If you’re a firm believer in feng shui, look away now. According to the feng shui rulebook, plants in the bedroom are a no-go. This is because plant energy is an upward trajectory and bedrooms should be entirely in the downward motion. If you want a relaxing environment then you’d do well to avoid lively growth at all cost, is the rationale behind those guidelines.

Reddit User Bonestown’s bedroom with plants

However, if you choose to bend the rules, you should buy as many plants for your bedroom as you think you can handle. It’s OK to stop after buying one or two but a lot of people like to transform their homes into indoor greenhouses. I don’t buy any flowering plants for my bedroom, partly because I have hayfever and I like to be able to breathe but also because their upkeep is more hassle.

The snake plant or rubber tree are great options to go for here and are low maintenance. Another great addition is the Pin-Stripe Calathea – you should check them out, they’re great.

Aloe Vera’s the only ingredient worthy of being added to moisturizers and lip balms, so it must be amazing. The soil of the aloe plant needs to be drier than the Sahara before you water it again and you know what that means? You can be lazy and it won’t die. I don’t know about you but that’s important to me.
