Do You Position Your Rug Correctly? Don’t Make These Mistakes

Rugs. Why do you love them? They look great, don’t they? That has to be the most important factor in buying one.

It’s a difficult question to answer: why do people own rugs? I’ve done extensive research to see what people much smarter than myself have to say on the issue, but the results were thin on the ground. I’ll offer something myself.

What’s the purpose of rugs?

Amazing cinematographers of your favorite movies frame their shots, the same with photographers. The frame is usually an object(s) in the foreground which wraps around the edges of the image, focusing the viewer’s attention on the subject being framed, usually in the background.

Visual framing

I believe the floor acts as a frame to the rug and lets your brain easily concentrate on it and disregard everything else. We know the brain is all about efficiency and this is more evidence for it. Conserve your energy for when the lions attack.

The framing can only take you so far. You still need to choose a rug that you like and one that works for your bedroom too.

Warm the toes

If, like me, you have wood floors then you can often find yourself with cold feet. Ask yourself if there’s anything worse in life than cold feet, the answer is no. Everything bad starts with cold feet. That’s literally and metaphorically.

Rugs are ideal for keeping your toes warm and therefore they improve your life.

Soothe the soul

In the same vain, wood floors are undoubtedly hard. Even the soft ones. This is especially evident in the mornings. How can we get around one of life’s harshest encounters? Correct, the rug comes to our rescue again.

You’re a simple creature, you love soft things. That doesn’t make you less of a man, it makes you human. Loads of rugs are mushy, squashy, squishy or all of the above.

Raise the tranquility

Lastly, I don’t know if this affects you or not but if your house is loud then rugs can quieten everything down and you’ll finally be able to get a full eight hours of delicious sleep.

You’ll be able to ignore your neighbor who seems to rattle about in between your alarm snoozes or the mouse that’s atomized itself so it can fit through the smallest of cracks in your walls only to chew on the innerds.

How to place rugs in your bedroom

The most common problem when it comes to rugs is not knowing where to put them. In theory, they can sit on any area of floor, in practice, they can’t.

• The rug is beneath the bed (could easily be a king or queen sized bed), nightstands and some kind of bench at the foot of the bed
• The rug is beneath the bed and nightstands
• The rug sits two-thirds of the way down the bed and out the bottom

Unless you own a mansion (employ an interior designer if you do, you fool!), it’s unlikely you’ll have enough free space on the remaining floor. What I mean is that you’ll almost certainly need to put your rug under your bed.

The cost of rugs

As I said at the start of this article, rugs can get expensive. It’s up to you to decide how much you’re willing to spend. As much as I would love uninhibited access to your bank account, that option isn’t available to me. You’re on your own. Like all of the great wizards out there, I’m powerless other than to guide you on your quest. This is your fight to fight.

How big should bedroom rugs be?

The worst thing you can do is to buy a rug that’s too small. Save your money if that’s your only option.

Getting a rug that’s too small is like putting on a sweater that’s two sizes too small. It’s difficult to breathe and looking down at your stomach, you can see multiple rolls of fat that initiate a series of memory flashes reminding you of the salted caramel chocolate buttons you ate at work last week. Do you want that feeling?

Rugs can’t be too small or fold against your furniture

There’s one thing that goes against the universe. Something that defies the very laws of nature. Unfortunately it’s a neglected by too many people. Is this going to be you? Let’s hope not. You’re probably wondering what the bloody hell I’m going on about, so, please, let me explain.

Rugs should never, ever be touch the walls or ride up against furniture.

You’d expect this to be common knowledge but there are a lot of people out there who seem to ignore this most basic of rules.

To avoid wall touching, ensure there’s sufficient room between the edge of the rug and the perimeter of the bedroom. You can have a figure: 5 to 8 inches.

It’s a similar case when battling against space with the furniture. Either buy yourself a rug that’s not large enough to touch it or get one that’s large enough to have the furniture sit on it comfortably.

Rugs for Small Bedrooms

If you happen to have a small bedroom then, in my frankly amazing opinion (really it is superb), you shouldn’t be afraid to lay down a rug that takes up most of the room. It looks great. A huge floor canvas.

It’s time to get on your hands and knees, whether you like it or not. If the rug is going to sit near the door then opening said door has to be priority number one. If you can’t get in your bedroom then you’re wasting your mortgage repayments.
